What is Botox and is it safe?

Botulinum toxin is a manufactured injectable medication used therapeutically and esthetically to reduce the strength of targeted muscle tissue.

There are 7 different types of Botulinum toxins- we are using Botulinum toxin Type A.

The active molecule is a highly refined purified protein. There is absolutely NO bacteria in these products.

Botulinum Toxin A Mechanism of Action

Botox mechanism of action

The skin's natural state is smooth, but wrinkles happen because the muscle motor underneath it. At the level of the neuromuscular junction, the nerve will release a chemical called acetylcholine and this will tell the muscle to contract. Over time with this ongoing muscle movement will cause the overlying skin to wrinkle.

By injecting Botulinum Toxin into the underlying muscle, we are allowing the protein to bind at the level of the neuromuscular junction and it works by blocking the release of acetylcholine, and as a result the muscle will not contract, and over the next week or two, you will start to see the smoothing and diminishing of fine lines and wrinkles.

Average dosing of Xeomin based on muscle group

Forehead

Frontalis + Glabellar Area

Frontalis

10-14 units

Forehead muscle that causes horizontal wrinkles above the eyebrows

Glabellar region- procerus & corrugators

10-30 units

The vertical lines or 'elevens' between the eyebrows

* Please note that while the Glabellar area can be done alone, the Frontalis area will need the Glabellar to be done with it.

Due to muscle recruitment if only the frontalis muscle were treated, the Glabellar would work even harder, and lines or elevens between the eyebrows that were slight or non-existent will be deepened, causing the 'angry Botox' look.

Crows feet

Hey, the crows called- they want their feet back!

Lateral Portion of the Obicularis Occulus

4-12 units/ eye

Radial Lip Lines/ Smokers Lines

With the Stanley craze these lines will become more prevalent

Orbicularis Oris Muscle

3.5-7 units

Temporalis muscle

Tired of being worn out from migraines or tension headaches? Botox can aid in reducing the intensity and duration of headaches

10-50 units/side

Please note that the Temporalis muscle will need to be treated bilaterally.

Masseter muscle- Relief from TMJ/ pain from grinding/bruxing

Although an occlusal guard will give your teeth protection from nighttime grinding, Botox injections at this muscle at the corner of your jaw can help aid in any pain or discomfort

10-50 units/side

Please note that the Masseter muscle will need to be treated bilaterally.

*Please note that while these are averages of dosing needed, units needed will both depend on the level of muscle activity already present, as well as the individual patient's anatomy. Please don't forget to schedule your two-week follow up with the Doctor. Any enhancements that may be needed can only be done at this follow up. If you are unable to make this appointment, you will need to wait the full 3 months to allow the toxin to wear off before any more can be added.
